Underwater
Acoustic Imaging
Using acoustic imaging, Collins can perform high resolution
scans of the underwater portions of a structure as well
as the channel bottom surrounding the structure. These
scans give Collins the unique ability to show bridge
owners exactly what the divers saw or felt below water
regardless of water clarity. Collins also uses this
technology to identify potential structural deficiencies
and hazards prior to entering the water to increase
diving safety and efficiency. Collins frequently uses
acoustic imaging while the diver is in the water to
allow topside personnel to direct the diver to specific
areas of interest during the inspection.
Collins uses a Kongsberg Mesotech high resolution scanning
sonar with both imaging and profiling transducers. Various
custom built sonar deployment and support apparatuses
are used to properly position and stabilise the sonar
unit to optimise accuracy during both imaging and profiling
operations.
Acoustic profiling allows Collins to perform quantitative
measurements of below water structure configurations,
structural deficiencies, and scour depressions with
an accuracy of up to 2.5 millimetres.
